Clarks End sting

For this brief I was asked to create an End sting for clarks. Along with this I was asked to produce a storyboard and a flickerbook.

This is my storyboard for my final outcome.

Clarks End sting

Rand's designs inspired me in this project his use of simple shapes helped me to simplify my ideas....

Images that I included in my ideas...

Housing organisation- Design department- portfolio visit

On Tuesday the 27th April I went to Moss Care Housing Association for a portfolio visit. I met a Gill Wood there who is part of the marketing department. I found out that she attended Stockport College a while ago to do Graphic Design. I showed and talked about my work with her. After I had explained my work etc. how I created each piece and what the brief was. She went through my work again and asked questions and made comments about my work. The first thing that she noticed was a spelling error on the Manchester Literature Festival poster, which I failed to notice previously. The information that was put on the poster was already written up so I assumed the text was correct, But it wasn't so that is something that I have to correct. The next piece of work was my T-shirt designs Gill was quite impressed with these and she correctly guessed what the message was, which was about the Elections. The next pieces were to do with my Typography project Gill liked my double page spread. She also commented on the layout of my portfolio she said she like how the fact that it wasn't lined up she liked how every piece was set at a different angle.
On my general presentation she said that she feels as though she was trying to pull certain pieces of information out of me, so she said that I should be a bit more clearer and confident when presenting my work.
She then went on to show me some work that she was in the process of doing. She showed me some leaflets she was doing along side a Graphic designer, There were a total of 46 leaflets promoting what they deal with in the organization. She told me it was so hard finding suitable images to go with all the issues they deal with without offending anyone such as racial harassment and domestic violence. She also showed me a previous design, it was a magazine cover that was made from another designer, it was poor quality the images and logos on the cover were stretched. Then she showed me the developed one which was much better set out.
After we looked at the work she told me to keep in touch and she would too and when I go in with my portfolio next she will take me to the graphic designers she works with and let them see my work.

Together Trust - portfolio visit

On the 21st April I went for a portfolio visit with Helen Bee at Together Trust. I made sure that I left early to allow myself enough time to get there. My appointment was at 4pm and I arrived at 3.20pm (which was a bit too early).
This being my first portfolio visit I was a bit anxious about what Helen was going to think about my work.
The visit started off with me explaining each piece of my work, e.g the brief, how I did it, what the ideas were behind it, why I chose to do what I did etc.
After this Helen commented on each piece of work and asked questions such as
What packages did I use, why did I chose certain colours, she also told me which pieces she liked and how I could develop my work even further. Helen told me that she liked the portfolio box and the sleeves she said the work that was in my portfolio was a good start. The pieces of work that she liked were my typography pieces. Which I was pleased with, as the typography pieces were my favourite pieces, and this was the brief that I enjoyed doing the most in the first year of my course. Looking at my Gill sans spread, she said that I could do another layout but with a different typeface and a different colour, she also said to make the typography pieces stronger I could add more from what I did for that brief/project. She also said that in my free time I should do some extra work outside of uni. She said if I know anyone who goes to church or works in a school or in a charity and they need posters, flyers or any other form of advertisement producing I could do that and then put it in my portfolio as well.
After we discussed my portfolio she gave me a list of useful websites to go on e.g package tutorials e.g Illustrator and Indesign. At the bottom of the list was interview tips useful for when I leave.
Overall the visit went really well and lasted about 40 minutes, I got some really good advice and feedback.

Together trust

This was my first live brief. We had a visit from Helen Bee from Together Trust. She had come in to give us the brief, which was to create a campaign for getting more people to foster. Together Trust are a Fostering agency based in Cheadle. They have been running for about 11 years now. As there is a national shortage of foster carers they asked me and the rest of my group to create a campaign that really stood out. I worked on this brief with Stacey together we came up with a range of ideas

Here are some of my earlier ideas:

Here are mine and Stacey's Ideas:
The slogan we went with was 'Do you care enough to care', this meant that not only do you care physically but do you care mentally which we thought was quite clever.

The idea wasn't taking forward due to the tagline already been used in a similar way.

Rubber band

For this brief I was asked to create a campaign to stop postmen dropping rubber bands. I have a range of ideas (see portfolio)

Competition brief - Metro

I was asked to create a transporting advertisement for the Metro newspaper.
Coming up with ideas for this brief took me a while I created many designs and picked the best designs in my portfolio. I had to persuade the target audience which were Urbanites that the Metro was more interesting than an ipod, iphone, portable laptop, books, magazines. Which was quite challenging, because many people who use the buses or any other form of transport in the morning rather listen to music, than attempt to read a newspaper, listening to music is much more relaxing.

Practitioner report

Alan Fletcher Fifty years of graphic work and (play) exhibition at the Cube Art Gallery

Alan Fletcher was a very famous graphic designer.Fletcher's way of thinking and his amazing visuals ensured that his work survived many years. In 1962 he founded Fletcher/ Forbes/ Gills firm. In 1965 Gill left. To replace Gill was Theo crosby. The firm was renamed Crosby/ Fletcher/Forbes. As the firm continued to do well, In 1972 two more partners joined the three named Kenneth Grange and Mervyn Kurlansky and they evolved into Pentagram. Fletcher created logos such as Reuters, the Victoria Albert Museum he also created a logo for Institute of Directors. He has worked with some well known clients and companies such as Pirelli, Shell, Lloyd's of London, Daimler Benz and the British arm of Time and Life.
I and a few others went along to the Alan Fletcher exhibition at the Cube art gallery to look at his work in more detail. I found that when I was looking at his work his like for typography was evident. His work was visually interesting it was vibrant and loud. I liked the rebus work he created using newspaper clippings, images and type. Also what was eye catching to me was the calender designs he created in different languages such as german, french and spanish
